Immigration and Parenting

One of the main issues which parents are facing is whether or not to teach the first language to their newborn baby. Idealistically, it is crucial to teach first language to our children as immigrants. But it is a long way which may create more issues. In families where both parents share first language it is much easier to teach the new born child his/her first language. But in families where the mother language of the newborn baby is different from the other parent, it may create confusion for the learner (new born baby) in process of learning first language. Also, the role of mother as the sole language teacher is challenging. In these cases, parents talks in the language which both of them are fluent in (English) so there will be fewer chances for the baby to learn the mother language. On the other side, the baby should learn to make interaction with her parents both in first and second language. As a result, it may create confusion in process of language learning.

The second issues which may be faced by many immigrants parents, is confliction between culture of main society and Persian culture. In the blog, the main focus of the bloggers is immigrants in western world. So, the two cultures which may conflict is Persian culture and western culture. It is obvious that the two term ‘Persian’ and ‘western’ cultures are very broad terms. But for now, we will just consider these two terms in order to open the discussion. There is very huge gap between western culture and Middle Eastern culture specifically Persian culture. Western culture mainly focuses on money. Everything is evaluated by its materialist value. On the other hand, in Persian culture, humanitarian values have huge value. In situations like immigrants lives, parents as leaders of families, has critical role in order to balance between cultural values of western culture and Persian culture. Although, it is a complicated task but it is possible. If both parents believe in values which are carried by both cultures, then they can follow a life style in which cultural values are respected.

The third issue which immigrant’s moms may face with is making balance between working and parenting. Many Persian females in western world, work as full-time employee. On the other hand, they enroll as mothers. Being mother itself brings huge responsibilities of parenting. Mothers are role mother specifically for their daughters. They create self-confidence or could ruin self-confidence in their daughter(s). Their role has significant difference in compare with fathers. Men usually are not as engaged as mothers in educating their children. After passing all daily challenges at work, moms come home tired of their job then they should start their task as mother(s) of the family. They should supervise different issues which their children have been faced with during the school day.  In these situations, the father of the family play critical role to create balance in parenting. Both parents are tired so they should cooperate with each other in order to handle their children issues and other housing tasks. In the Persian culture, historically it has been mother who deals with children issues and housing jobs. But in the Western world, with its specific life style, without cooperation of both parents,  the family cant survive as a successful family. As the result, children in these families will face with huger social, educational issues.
