Immigration and Educational Issues

One of the best ways for immigrants to enhance their social status in a new community to which they migrate is to gain high educational degrees. Each academic year, many international students are admitted in the American universities.  Among these international students, Persian students are among successful ones. Although at first place, it may seem easy way to enter to American universities but, completing an educational program specifically in graduate levels, is challenging: The first barrier with which most of Persian international students face is language; all of them need to pass TOEFL exam. In order to pass TOEFL exam, just being skilled in English is not enough. The Test taker should have specific test skills in order to accomplish a desire score.

The second obstacle for Persian international students refers to educational system of American universities. To address specification of the educational system of American universities two factors are note-worthy: Mostly in Iran, there is a huge different authoritarian status between professors and students: Professors benefit from very high level as the sole authority in university classes. Students just follow their instructions. On the other hand, in the American educational system, students almost have freedom to express themselves in classes through oral lectures and writing class papers. When a Persian student is admitted in an American university, he/ she may face with this educational difference. The Persian student may have good and scholar ideas to express. but just because he/she comes from more reserved culture and/or educational system, he/she lacks confidence to express his/her ideas. As a result, he/ she will have difficulty in gaining desirable grades and consequently, he/she may become less confident in educational and academic knowledge. The second difference between American and Persian educational system is regarding orientation toward research. In most of under developed countries, academic research has low value. Government in those countries, don’t spend money to develop academic research projects. Iran as one of under developed country is not an exclusion. It is obvious that Persian students, who have been educated in Iran, mostly don’t have high academic skill in developing researches. When they migrate to western countries, they are demanded to write research papers at least at class level. These students really struggle with lack of ability to write research papers. Even though, they may have brilliant academic ideas, they don’t know how to express it in appropriate academic writing style.
